Ride The West

The Ride the West tour is a scenic and challenging, fully supported 23 day bicycle tour from Astoria OR to Newport Beach CA. From the beautiful Oregon Coast and the majestic Redwoods of Northern CA, to the spectacular ocean views and inland valley roads of Sonoma Valley, each day is an adventure you will never forget. The tour averages 67 miles a day for approximately 1,400 miles and 2 days off in Crescent City, CA and San Francisco CA.

Astoria, OR to Crescent City, CA

Ride the West begins in Astoria OR and after an initial 20 miles inland the ride pops out at the coastal town of Seaside where Lewis and Clark once shared the same views of the beautiful Oregon coast. From there the ride becomes one of the most scenic and diverse rides in America by Bicycle’s inventory providing daily breathtaking scenes as it meanders down the coast. In Oregon, the ride passes through many small coastal communities including the art colony of Cannon Beach, Tillamook - the cheese capital of the world, Old Town Florence, Gold Beach, Ferndale, and Bandon. Not a day passes without sensory overload provided by Mother Nature’s handworks such as Haystack Rock, Heceta Head, Devils Punchbowl, Cape Perpetua, Arch Rock, and Natural Bridge. After six days of riding, the route crosses the state line into California and we pedal into Crescent City for our first rest day.

Crescent City, CA to San Francisco, CA

The second leg of the tour heads south out of Crescent City and explores areas that begin to show the variety and beauty unique to this part of the country. Day one enters the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway and the first of several giant redwood groves to include the Avenue of the Giants. These trees have withstood floods, fire, drought, and pests for thousands of years and still stand majestically instilling awe in all who witness their existence. You will ride where once the small town of Weott was wiped out by the flood of the century that sent 115 feet of water down the Eel River in 1964. Venturing farther inland, the vistas of Sonoma Valley Wine Country present their own beauty and provide gorgeous riding over vineyard covered hills. On the final day of this leg, we head out of wine country and work our way to Sausalito, a bayside town with many waterfront cafes, a bike store(!!) and an incredible view of San Francisco, if the fog is in our favor. You will get a brief taste of the Marin Headlands as you climb up to and then cross Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco for our second and final rest day of the tour.

San Francisco, CA to Costa Mesa, CA

After leaving San Francisco, the ride skirts the scenic California coastline to Santa Cruz. It heads inland but not until after a ramble through Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row, Monterey Peninsula’s 17 Mile Drive with it’s multi-million dollar homesites, Spy Glass Hill, and Pebble Beach Golf Course. You will experience more variety on the last leg as it turns inland to Carmel Valley through the famous golden hills of California and through some of the richest agricultural areas in America. After a stop in the Scandinavian town of Solvang, the ride follows an old stagecoach route through the mountains before descending back to the coastal town of Santa Barbara. The final days pass through Malibu and Santa Monica and conclude with scenic miles on local bike paths to Newport Beach and our final destination of Costa Mesa. This ride provides never ending variety, postcard scenery, and challenging terrain averaging over 3500 feet of climbing daily. A “must do” for anyone’s ride bucket list.
