Portsmouth NH to Washington DC
Ride the East begins in New Hampshire's seaside city of Portsmouth. Before we head south, take a few miles and pedal over the Piscataqua River to touch Maine, the northernmost state in the east. Now we really get rolling. We head inland away from the ocean, cross into Massachusetts and traverse the Merrimack River Valley. Through the Seven Hills region of Worcester, we climb Dead Horse Hill and you will learn its history and "Legend". The terrain continues to roll as we pass through rural America. We conquer another state when we cross into Connecticut, ride through the Connecticut River Valley and overnight in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. The terrain will kick up longer and steeper as we cross into New York. We overnight on a plateau high above the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, the original capital city of New York in 1777. The next day we cross the Hudson and roll along in the foothills of the Shawangunk Mountains. After Port Jervis, we follow the Delaware River into New Jersey. Pennsylvania welcomes us with terrific rural scenery. We ride through Amish country around Lancaster and ultimately follow the Susquehanna River into Maryland. Things get a little more upscale now as we pass many stately mansions and countryside ranches on our way to Rockville. Here we pick up the Rock Creek Trail and quietly spin our way into our Nation's Capital via the National Park System. We ride right into town and overnight in the middle of the action. Welcome to Washington DC! Time to take a well deserved day off to explore town.

Washington DC to North Myrtle Beach SC

The route heads out from Washington DC as we cross the Arlington Memorial Bridge and pick up the Mount Vernon Bike Path, past Arlington and Alexandria Virginia. From Fredericksburg, we pass many Civil War Memorial sites, take some time and explore the history. As we continue south through rural Virginia, you will see cotton, peanut, and tobacco fields and many stately plantation homes. You are sure to see farmers beginning the fall harvest. As we cycle through the countryside, the terrain will flatten out completely. Well, nearly. Next we meander across North Carolina, head east to the ocean and land in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Here we enjoy another day off the bike. Time for a round of golf, a walk on the beach, or just relax, the tour is going quickly.

North Myrtle Beach SC to Jacksonville FL

To start off the third and final leg of the tour, we spend a few days cycling south across rural South Carolina, trekking inland again and around the Intracoastal Waterway over to Georgetown. Now it’s time to get off the tourist path, see real southern towns, and enjoy the accent and hospitality that has made this region famous. The cycling continues to be rural, flat and interesting. You'll see the fields change from peanuts to cotton to okra and back again. We cycle right over Lake Marion and visit with the weekend fishermen and ultimately cross into Georgia at Savannah. Here, we'll take a final day off the bike. The south welcomes us with warm hospitality and great food. We'll spin into Florida on our final day to conclude the ride in Jacksonville. Great Ride!
