Great Mississippi River Ride

Join America by Bicycle as we follow the magical Mississippi River from New Orleans to Minneapolis, MN. We cycle the back country roads including the National River Road and the Mississippi River Trail. We begin the tour in New Orleans in the late spring and cycle north to end in Minneapolis in early summer.

New Orleans LA to Memphis TN

The southern section of the Great Mississippi River Ride travels through flat sections of the Mississippi River Delta. We cycle out of the Big Easy, past Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and ultimately into the Louisiana countryside. Fertile farm land abounds as we pass many plantations growing cotton, rice, sugarcane, and a few fish hatcheries. Soon we cross into Mississippi.

Mississippi is home to the Delta Blues. You are sure to hear everything from Cajun to Zydeco as we travel across the southern states into Tennessee. Make sure you take a little time as the tour stops in Vicksburg and Natchez to explore the wealth of Civil War history. Chalk up another state as we cross into Tennessee and work our way right into downtown Memphis. Here we’ll take the day off and see all the sights Memphis has to offer. Take a walk along Beale Street and visit Sun Records, tour Mud Island and Graceland. Then dine on real southern BBQ. There is something for everyone in Memphis.

Memphis TN to Saint Louis MO

After an off day we pick up the Mississippi River Trail, cross the river and spin back into the countryside of Tennessee. Enjoy the southern hospitality! The next day we take a ferry ride across the Mississippi River and touch 4 states in one day, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri. As we enter Missouri the State will  “SHOW ME” some flat rural farm country and the cycling is terrific. You will have an opportunity to see some Missouri rollers as we work our way in and out of the river valley. We wind our way along the river again and see the river boats as we pass the locks nearing St. Louis. And finally come out of the country, cross the river and head into downtown St. Louis. You’ll have a chance to take in all the sights of St. Louis on our final day off.

Saint Louis MO to Minneapolis MN

After a day of sightseeing we’re back on the bike and headed north. The northern section of the tour is more rural and rolling, with many more river boats and locks as we stop for a visit in Mark Twain’s home town of Hannibal, MO. From there we meander along the river and cross into Illinois. The riding continues to be scenic, rural small town America. Time is passing and the river is calling. As we cross into Wisconsin, the terrain really rolls up and down along huge bluffs created by the great Glaciers that created the tremendous Mississippi River Valley. The scenery on top of the bluffs is fantastic. You'll find the people as friendly as the views, and you’ll enjoy the reaction when you tell them where you started cycling. After our final overnight in Red Wing, a quaint river town made famous for its shoes and pottery, we tackle the last hills and roll into Eagan a suburb just south of Minneapolis. Mission accomplished!
