Today we celebrate the 1/2 way point of our trip! We loaded our luggage and took a short ride across the street to the Cracker Barrel to start our day. This mornings ride includes a beautiful bike path, getting there is part of the fun. The cue sheet reads “R/L @ Broadview St into parking lot; cross grass to bike path and go under bridge”. After seeing and thinking about it a few, it makes sense… Promise.
Woody celebrated his 72nd birthday here with us last night. This guy is an awesome cyclist, inspiring us all. Better known as the “Bicycle Bum” or the “Randoneur Extraordinaire”, he has logged over 447,000 miles since 1975. He first started logging miles to earn the Presidents Award in Cycling in 1974 and never stopped. He has ridden all over the world including Europe and Australia. He has ridden the famous RAGBRI 5 times the Paris Bres Paris 7 times. His favorite ride is the one hr is on. Woody has great advice for newcomers to cycling. “Don’t burn out, enjoy every ride.”
We rolled, we climbed our way to SAG. Although closed, the winery was the perfect back drop for our SAG stop. The covered porch providing shade, the chairs, a place to rest our legs. SAG is a place to nourish the body, porches nourish much more. The road continued to roll till the descend, down to field of new crops. Flat land lying in sight of the levee guiding the rivers path. It is here that in 2011 a flood from the Great Mississippi left this area 13ft. under water. Looking at it now it’s hard to believe, the river so far away.
