Distance: 64 miles
Weather: Clear sunny skies all day. Upper 40s to start. Sunny and low 50s to end. Brisk wind out of the NNW for most of the day. Started strong and eased off by the end of the ride.
Highlights of the day:
The temperatures are starting to feel a little more seasonal. Not really cold but there is definitely a bite in the air. Crystal clear nights usually lead to crisp mornings. We’ll try to stress that term tomorrow morning as we will be greeted with low 30s to start. But that’s tomorrow, how about today??
We started the day riding through Manchester. It was a little more city, more traffic and traffic signals, but after the first 8 miles we were back on quieter country roads. We’re heading north and as we head north, we seem to be seeing more & more color. More reds. More oranges. More ooos & aahs. The timing and intensity of the colors varies wildly from year to year. This year seems to be running a little later but we're not done yet and the trees are finally starting to show off a bit.
We had a visitor today. Fred, AbB alumnus from Across America North, stopped by to say hi and bring us cookies. Homemade cookies that were fresh baked this morning. They were still warm when he met us. (sigh...) It was great catching up and, I won’t lie, the cookies were super tasty too. Thank you Fred!
The route featured more New Hampshire hills - some challenging climbs and some fast fun descents and many repeat rollers. Between the last two days, I think the riders’ legs got a good New England style workout. We rolled into Sanford ME for the night. I don’t think there will be any issues sleeping. Tomorrow we ride to Portland ME for the last day of the tour.
