Highlights of the day:
Today was all about seeing the sights. Seven miles into the ride, we pulled into Fort Williams Park and the Portland Head Light. We then headed down the coast to Two Lights on Cape Elizabeth. There is only one lighthouse but when it was original built, it had two towers each with its own light – hence the name Two Lights. Here we took pictures and had a few quick bites at the day’s one SAG stop.
Back on the bikes and down the coast, we took a little side trip out to the point of Prouts Neck and back. Nice foliage. Lovely coastal views. All for just over 4 miles. On route once more, we made our way back to Route 1. While it isn’t the most picturesque route on our tour, it does enable us to visit Len Libby’s Candies & Gifts. Why would this interest us? Well it took our youngest member of the team to point out that this establishment is home to Lenny, the world’s only life size chocolate moose. 1700 pounds of chocolate.
Pictures taken. Chocolate tasted and purchased, we headed on to Old Orchard Beach and our stopping point for the day. Eating ice cream. Walking along the beach. Viewing the plethora of tchotchkes and t-shirts. Eating seafood. These are all activities on the agenda to close out an enjoyable Day 1.
