Distance: 88 miles
Weather: Cool and cloudy but no rain!
Weather did not look promising the morning but the riders set out full of high hopes. Those hopes were realized since they had cool temperatures and cloudy skies all day but not one drop of rain! In other words, perfect cycling weather!
It didn’t take these riders long to travel 58 miles to be able to say, “Toto, I don’t think we are in Kansas anymore!” as they enter a new state, Missouri! After the riders cross the bridge over the Missouri river they ride through a flood plain for several miles before moving to higher ground. We were a bit worried that this road would be closed because of flooding that sometimes occurs due to heavy rainfall. But, although the river was near its banks, it did not flood so riders were spared a detour.
Once in Missouri the roads began to really roll. Those kinds of hills where momentum from the downhill gets one up a fair portion of the next hill…..but not quite. Some riders found this a nice reprieve from the mostly flat riding we had been doing recently. Once out of the second sag stop that was at a town square park in the tiny town of Dekalb, MO riders found the rollers getting even longer.
A few more miles and they were treated to a nice windy road through the park in St. Joseph. Riders made quick work of this road and the few city streets behind it, perhaps so that they could get an early start on their next rest day which is tomorrow!
