Distance : 74 mile
Weather: Cool early turning just beautiful!
Early to rise for breakfast, load the trailer, a group picture, and we were off for the adventure of a life time! Riders rode in a group for the first couple miles and met the first challenge of a mile long steep hill. All proved themselves to be ready for a steep curvy climb and were met at the top with a chilly moist fog. Sixteen miles onward to the beach where shoes and socks were removed for the customary rear wheel dipping into the Pacific Ocean.
The tradition was followed by a chilly and moist ride as riders approached the majestic Golden Gate Bridge. However, the closer we came to this the magnificent work of engineering, fog lifted in time for the riders to cross the bridge. It provides wide paths on both sides of the vehicle traffic for riders and pedestrians to safely maneuver across. Riders were kept on their toes as they rode around the bridge supports when there was change of wind direction.
After arriving on the other side to enjoy the first SAG stop, the group continued onto a paved bicycle trail which lead them to the beautiful sea side town of Sausito. This area is filled with many cyclists and we learned, as one of our riders witnessed, police took the speed limits very serious and were ticketing cyclists that were going above the posted speed limits.
A series of paved bike paths provided the riders the opportunity of staying away from the local traffic and allowing them to experience some peace and quiet as they traveled on. Eventually the day ended with several miles on a well traveled highway with a wide shoulder that led into the town of Vallejo where we will spend the night.
We have a group of seriousl well trained riders who did extremely well all day with the navigating of the route - many of them using the Garmin (GPS) route that had been downloaded into their individual computers.
All together everyone's efforts made for a smooth Day 1 for the openg of the 2016 Cross Country Challenge!
