Distance: 74 miles
Weather: Warm mid to high 80s and humid
After a great day off, we headed to Richmond Indiana for the first of the five days in this section of the ride. Although the section is called, “Country mileage” today was a relatively short day of 74 miles. A slight tailwind, not too hot conditions and pretty flat terrain made it seem like an even shorter day. Unlike back in Nevada, riders passed through town after town today. Many of these towns seemed to revolve around the antique industry with quaint looking shops lining the road. The miles seem to go by quicker when we pass through these towns.
In Knightstown many riders stopped at the gym where the “Hoosiers” movie was filmed. They were able to get a tour of the school (which is no longer used for teaching), buy souvenirs and even shoot some hoops. One of our riders spent a great deal of time there shooting hoops and thinking about how the film inspired him when his basketball coach had him watch it in fifth grade. Good times!
A few towns later, in Cambridge City, riders we re treated to a special sag stop held by Barry F. and David B., two 2015 Cross Country Challenge alumni. It was great to see them . T he riders appreciated the ice cream, cold drinks and homemade cookies they brought. Thanks guys! Speaking of alumni, Dan B . from our 2010 (?) ride rode alongside our riders today as he often does when we ride out of Indy. I didn’t get to see him but, if you are reading this, hello Dan!
Just a short while after our special sag , riders began arriving at the hotel. This hotel was especially nice to us, prepping goody bags and buying us cookies. They even helped us with our luggage unload, something most hotels want nothing to do with! Some of our riders were happy to see “Steak and Shake” right across from our hotel as it has become a new food group in their lives….one person was excited to see a certain hamburger joint housed in a castle just down the block.
We were all happy that the rain held off until tonight! At the time of this writing thunder can be heard all around a long with a heavy rain on the window! Let’s hope it goes far away before morning! Check back and see!
