Distance: 75 miles
Weather: Baby it’s hot outside…in the high 90s!
After yesterday's brutal assault from heat, riders attacked today's miles with aching minds, bodies, and souls. With an early start at 6:00am, they were anxious to get this 75 miles, mostly on Highway 50 done!
Today’s SAG stop was held at mile 38.5 on a dirt lot with nothing but many mountains and hills that looked like huge sand mounds with some surrounding canyons. Twelve miles later and 10 degrees hotter (now at 93) riders passed through a small town named Delta. Quite a few samples of "wall art" were painted on sides of buildings.
Many chose to stop in this quaint town and have lunch since they were there early due to our start time. Over the last 25 miles more signs of civilization could be seen, however still very little vegetation or crops unless an irrigation system was in place.
Other riders spent the afternoon shopping at a local bike shop, cleaning their bikes, doing laundry, or just enjoying time with each other. Tomorrow will be another hot day as we move on to Gunnison.
A couple of comments heard today on the road today - "I must be stronger than I thought"; "my Garmin hit 116 degrees today"; and "lost my tweezers and had to use my teeth to pull a piece of metal out of my tire!" These cyclists are amazing people and are having a spectacular experience!!!
