Distance: 90 miles
Weather: Scorching to 105 degrees!!
Hot, hot, hot!!! Breakfast at 5:30am, load at 6am and out trying to beat the heat. All were challenged today including staff who were very busy providing water. 90 miles of NO shade and temps above 100 degrees with some Garmins showing another 10 degrees (perhaps due to the black asphalt?)!
Our first SAG, at mile 25, was at a truck stop and staff were able to park beside a big rig that cast a shadow for us to refuel. Temperatures reached 94 degrees by 10 am. Riders forced liquids and headed out for the next 40 miles to the next SAG where they rested underneath an overpass for shade. They were encouraged to not head out again until they felt good and cool.
Five miles later, the group entered their 4th state, Colorado, where they will ride up over the Rocky Mountains in a couple of days. Staff continued to keep an eye on all riders to insure all made a safe trip into the hotel. Riders continue to amaze themselves and staff with on-going fortitude as they plod through these conditions one pedal stroke at a time!
Early bedtime and early rise again tomorrow as temps are expected to climb again!
