Distance: 95 miles
Weather: Pretty mild started in the high 60s then went up to low 80’s
Although we left century days behind us in Erie, today was a long day…just 5 miles shy of a century, but the days will be shorter (not necessarily easier) after this! At least there wasn’t much navigation as we stayed on Route 20 or Routes 20 and 5 for a substantial portion of the day. Lots of climbing today, not the kind where you go up, up ,up but the rollers that go up and down.
After climbing the same 100 or so feet over and over again, riders had yet another root beer stand sag stop in the town of Avon, NY. Many riders relaxed a bit over a root beer float some even had lunch, I hear Tom Wahl’s root beer stand has fantastic fish sandwiches (thank you Tony I will remember that for next year!).
About 12 miles past the sag riders encountered Shark’s Ice Cream Shop which Gene had warned them about at route rap. Having just had lunch or a rootbeer float did not stop most of these riders from stopping to try some homemade ice cream or a shake. There were 11 AbB riders in there when I went in, and Alex said there were more later! The ice cream gave them fuel for the next ten miles to the hotel. Of course some had extra energy and took a spin down by the lake (Canandaigua, a Finger Lake).
Tomorrow we will encounter yet another finger lake as we make our way to Liverpool. Check back and see how that goes!
