Distance: 74 miles
Weather: Sunny and warm - very clear
After a 5:30 am breakfast, riders headed out to explore a game of "how many times can we cross over I-80 before we have to get on it?". The early morning air was perfect for a well shaded, curvy, little traveled, taxing climb up to the SAG at mile 26. In those first miles riders crossed over I-80 and back a total of five times and finally at mile 32, I-80 won out and riders entered onto it for ten miles. For many, this was their first experience of riding on an interstate.
After leaving I-80, at the bottom of Donner Pass Road, cyclists refueled and rode a demanding climb up to the top of the Pass where they were treated to some snow-capped mountains before beginning to navigate a very fast, curvy, downhill descent. The blue color of Donner Lake and the crystal clear blue sky provided some breath taking views for photos.
Arriving at the bottom, riders rode alongside the lake and into the town of Truckee where they will spend the night and prepare for another big climbing day tomorrow. All did well today and can be very proud of their accomplishment as they get stronger.
Our European riders continue to be amazed that they have only ridden in one state so far because their countries are smaller than CA.
Stay tuned to see how they do tomorrow!
