Distance: 55 miles
Weather - Cloudy, but warm
Riders headed out onto I-80 three miles out of the hotel and were on it for over 50 miles today making for a very short cue sheet. The interstate was much less stressful for them today since it was Sunday and there was very little truck traffic.
They faced one climb today, up to Golconda Summit, and enjoyed the only SAG stop of the day. The reward was a 5.6 mile downhill followed 11 miles later by an optional rest stop. For the last 12 miles riders were faced with two more situations that could potentially be hazardous if not ridden with caution . On the shoulder, every 10 feet, they crossed 30 in. wide shallow rumble strips which made a distinct sound as they rode over them. This was followed by roadwork the rest of the way into town - fortunately, riders were able to ride in the left lane that was closed to traffic AND had been newly surfaced. Then after a few short turns, they arrived at the Hotel.
Next to the hotel is the one and only fast food chain - McDonalds. Many riders stopped for refreshment on the way in. Where else, but in Battle Mountain, would you see a McDonalds sign stating, " OUT OF COFFEE AND BBQ SAUCE - None available till Monday" - hopefully the hotel will have plenty for us tomorrow morning, coffee that is!
Dinner tonight was at El Aguila Real and we left the restaurant to find the beautiful sunset shining down on the mountains in the distance. Arriving back to the hotel, we were greeted with a sculpture of a stagecoach.
