The Auburn Warm-up!
Another great day to be on a bicycle, but, aren’t they all? After a short primer by our mechanic, Jim, the riders set off from Sacramento for a 32 mile jaunt on the American River Bike Trail. This would wind its way from our hotel in Sacramento, past the Nimbus Dam, up the American River, where riders could catch a glimpse of Folsom State Prison, before they left the bike path at Beal’s Point Park, for their only rest stop of the day. After seeing first-hand how low the water is in Folsom Lake, it is easy to see why the area is very much in need of moisture.
After leaving the park, the CCC’ers only had about 20 miles to go to reach tonight’s hotel. That was very good news, indeed! The problem was, those 20 miles were mostly uphill, on a very warm day. A good chance to see just why some people brought those extra-large gears! No matter, everyone climbed like the champs they are, and most took lunch in Auburn.
The riders have begun to separate themselves into smaller riding groups – one of the most eclectic is Team Jelly Belly – a mixture of riders from the Netherlands, the UK, and one lone Texan.
Well, I hope they are all resting as tomorrow promises more elevation and more adventure. Come back to see how they did.
