Distance: 51 miles
Weather: 70s to begin climbing up to the mid-80s, pleasant but with a wind!
I know it is corny but I have to say that the riders “got into Dodge” today. Although the mileage was short, the wind, coupled with a few stops, kept the riders from thinking this was a rest day!
One of the first things we saw today was a field where parts, big gigantic parts, are stored for the construction of windmills. Throughout the day “wide loads” would pass us on the road bearing these parts…on part per truck, and even then they hung off the back of the truck. Although these trucks never got too close for comfort, riders were given a little push as they went by.
About 30 miles into our day we reached the town of Cimmaron KS, which is known to us as the town where the “Clark Pharmacy” is located. Even though it was just 10 miles after the sag stop, most riders stopped at the old fashioned soda fountain here to enjoy a milkshake, a malt or an ice cream. What a great place!
A little ways down the road, riders visited a historical marker where the remnants of wagon tracks from the Santa Fe trail can be seen (some claim this does take some imagination). On the way into Dodge City riders were greeted with a cutout sign of five gunfighters. Some climbed the hill to take pictures with the cutout. For those who didn’t there will be another sign just like it as we “Get outta Dodge” and head to Great Bend tomorrow.
