Mileage: 74 miles
Weather: Beautiful. Upper 50s to start. Uppers 80s to end. Mostly sunny. Low humidity. Winds out of the WSW.
Highlights of the day:
We rolled out of the hotel and headed straight into more farms and cornfields. Going from Point A to Point B on a diagonal in farm country requires lots of lefts and rights. It’s a grid system. We needed to SW and all we could do was either south or west. When we headed south, we had a very noticeable crosswind from the right. When we headed east – WEEEEEEEEE! Tailwind! The riders really liked turning left. We saw lots & lots of wind turbines all pointed in the right direction. Right direction being one that indicates a favorable wind.
Our SAG stop du jour was at the Reeves Farm. It’s a family farm (the Reeves) who welcome us each year to refuel and relax in their front yard. Years ago, two AbB staff members started a conversation with Mr Reeves about taking a picture of the tractor in his front yard. He went on to show the many tractors, some antiques, that he had restored. A friendship ensued and we’ve been stopping by annually ever since. Mr Reeves has since passed on but his wife, Sandra, continues to look forward to our yearly visits. Thank you!
We had an alumnus visit us today. Jay Crane has been on at least 3 AbB rides. One of them was North in 2015. He rode out from our hotel in Birch Run and joined us for the ride back into town. It was great catching up with him and talking about our tours. He also brought some amazingly evil chocolate cookies. We love it when alumni visit. We love it when alumni visit with treats!
All in all it was a great day on the bike. Short(er) mileage after yesterday’s 112 miles on short rest because of the time change. Riders looked a little dazed at the SAG stops yesterday. Riders were all smiles today from breakfast through unloading luggage.
Tomorrow is our last day in Michigan. It seems like we just got here. The states are narrower and the days are definitely zipping by more quickly. Don’t forget to look up!
