Mileage: 99 miles
Weather: Mid 60s to start. Upper 80s to end. And humidity. Lots & lots of humidity.
Highlights of the day:
Long day. Short entry.
The day started with a weather delay. Storm cells moved through our area providing a nice light show and some rain – not something we wanted to ride in. Eager as they were to start the day, no one really complained as we waited for the skies to clear a bit. It was just over an hour delay, not a long time in the scope of things. But on a long day with stiff semi-unfavorable winds and some heat, that hour can become more precious at the end of the day (see note above re: short entry…).
The route started with 7 miles on a state numbered route with a little more traffic and a few more trucks. A left turn and we found ourselves on quieter roads with all the sights and smells rural Minnesota has to offer. We continued through lots of towns, past lots of farms, and ended with a bike path in Rochester. Quite a few towns along the way have had extensive bike lanes and bike paths. Our routes use them whenever possible. We are staying in larger towns as we move east, and the bike paths are a big help in avoiding downtown traffic. A bit of construction at the end of the path was cause for some confusion but everyone made it in safely.
Time to sleep well for tomorrow we get up and do it all over again.
