Day 0: Opening Day
Cycling Date: Sunday 14-June-15
It’s Opening Day!!
Prepping and planning complete. It’s time to start the 2015 version of America by Bicycle’s Across America North. The crew has a slightly new look this year. We have some new faces and returning staff members in new positions. Judy Clawson will head up the team as tour leader with Pam Shedd assisting with on-road logistics. We have a whole team of Mikes or at least 3 who will be filling out the mechanics team. Michael Knuesel will start as lead mechanic from Astoria into Boise. Mike Munk will take over as the lead mechanic in Boise and take us the rest of the way into Portsmouth NH. Mike Theiler will assist in mechanics for the whole trip. Suffice to say, if you need anything done on your bike, just yell MIKE! Karen Bauer returns as lead SAG coordinator with Nick Poikonen assisting and rounding out the team.
Full disclosure, we offered an early registration on Saturday (yesterday), so I guess I should have started the blog yesterday. But alas I did not. 29 of our 34 riders took advantage of early registration. This made for a busy Saturday but made Sunday much more relaxed (comparatively speaking). Shipped bikes were re-assembled. Safety checks were completed. Riders were registered. Then it was time for many of the riders to head to the Pacific Ocean. Riders managed their first cue sheet guided foray to Fort Stevens State Park to dip wheels and ceremonially start their adventure across the US.
Staff had time for a quick breath and then it was off to orientation with participant introductions, daily routine overview, logistics, and the all important safety talk. The day closed with our first group dinner catered at the hotel and first route rap.
The real work starts tomorrow as we head out of Astoria to Saint Helens. I think we all earned a good night’s sleep!
