Day 2: St Helens to Welches, OR
Cycling Date: Tuesday 17-June-14
Mileage: 75 miles
Weather: More wet. And a bit chilly. Low 50s. Good day for grit!
Highlights of the day:
Today was a culinary journey. Our first SAG stop featured cold pizza. Our second SAG stop featured treats from world(?) renowned Voodoo Donuts (more details and pictures to follow) and Starbucks coffee. The capstone was Calamity Jane’s for hamburgers, shakes, and chili cheese fries. Hey – riding in chilly damp weather burns lots of calories!!!
The route took us further up the Columbia River, and into the Cascade Range. We skirted Portland on a series of bike paths, including a wonderful run between the river and East Marine Drive. There are villages of floating houses on this stretch of the river. Not houseboats exactly, but little two story houses, often with one-boat garages and extensive gardens, that happen to be afloat and moored to floating walkways.
Coming off the bike path and into Blue Lake Park, we were greeted by 3 riders from Across America North 2013. Holly, Don and Drew stopped by to treat the riders to Voodoo Donuts. Donuts? So what’s the big deal? One might ask… These are enormous creations that are covered with and/or contain kid’s cereal or crushed candy or cookies or you name it. I think one rider found pieces of bubblegum in her donut. They are a taste treat not to be missed when in Portland. See picture below! Besides the food, it was great fun to catch up & share stories with the alumni.
From the city, we started our climb into the foothills of the Cascades. Traffic lessened and we were supposed to be treated to vistas of the Columbia River, lush green hillsides, and a sneak peak or two of Mt Hood. The cloud cover was low and the mist heavy. We asked the riders to use their imagination or Photoshop. Many riders had lunch in Sandy at Calamity Jane’s, a cowboy themed restaurant featuring enormous hamburgers and yummy shakes. Did I mention that riding is about eating? Our day ended at a very nice resort hotel. We will definitely enjoy being spoiled for one night.
